Staying at our other dear friends luxurious palazzo, it was a weekend filled with art, shopping, strolling, eating (a lot of mozzarella, pecorino, tomatos & roquette), drinking vino and sipping frothy cappucinos. Everything that makes Rome such a great city to visit! Start to finish it was non-stop fun – shopping up a storm and even being invited to a famous senators fancy apartment where we were taken on a guided tour of the palazzo and got to see the room where the Pope once slept!
Other things Kitkat & amici did:
• View the incredible Cy Twombly exhibition at Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna. Twombly is regarded as one of the foremost American abstract expressionist painters in the world today. His fascination with poetry and classical mythology presents itself in vast canvases of light, color, graffiti, squiggles from pastels, smears from a palate knife, splotches of paint and landscapes filled iwht movement and depth.
• Shopping – of course the area around Piazza Espangola is the best. Aside from the Gucci & Chanel’s we found some nice gems – and many of them on via Del Babuino . Of course I am a huge fan of Belstaff for leather jackets, great boots and pants, but our two lovely discoveries were TAD & Osklen. TAD is a concept store with a great range of clothing, shoes, accessories, perfumes, furniture, gadgets, fabrics and flowers. You can also eat in the café or have your hair styled in their salon. Great ambience, assortments and sensory experience. Osklen was another great discovery. A brazilian brand out of Rio de Janeiro, their menswear and women’s wear feature super soft , high quality cotton and linen which drape so beautifully. Most especially their leather bags and shoes were very unique and I love their range of sexy swimwear that the Brazilians are so well-known for. Also and absolute pleasure was the great salespeople who are very knowleageable (& proud) of their brand!
• Mangia, Mangia, Mangia!! Vino, Vino, Vino!! Ok so I confess that we ate at a few resto’s but frankly we hung out mostly at only one and kept on going back. GUSTO (Piazza Augusto Imperatore) was fantastico! – Ristorante pizzeria, osteria fromaggeria, wine bar and ristorante di persce. These different parts of the resto group are clustered around the piazza and we just kept on hopping from one to the next. So much so that the waiters asked us after day 2 if we were coming back the next day. Great vino, cheese, salad and pizza. Ambience and vibe is great in wine bar, ristorante, and live music on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Last and not least a trip to Roma is not complete without a great run in the Villa Borghese. Snaking up the hill, through the park and clocking up some mileage (and a great sweat), we looked down on the beautiful vista of rooftops and cupola’s below with church bells tolling. The true sound of Roma…

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 179px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9qvK1ugPy2o/Sb0LRZ1ShUI/AAAAAAAAAm8/sS-cU8b0LpU/s320/YM-webIndex.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5313415528987133250" />
Yellowman

A few years ago I was on a flight to LA and I saw this guy wearing the most amazing top. He explained that they choose designs from artisan tattoo artists - so most designs are one of a kind; and the fabric itself fits like a second skin - a super-fine, silk-like athletic technical fabric that keeps your skin dry and comfortable. That guy turned out to be Peter Mui of Yellowman. At that time, they were just about to launch their first store in LA. Always have. That's why this image is a blur because that is me and I love it. No time to stand still or for complacency. My friends watch me as I chase around. My good friend G joked one day that I was always on my way to an appointment. This can be good and it can also be bad. Why is it that many people like me just cannot sit down and just be? Worse than that, it's our minds that keep on ticking over - Facebook, Asmallworld, LinkedIn, Twitter... I think sometimes we are so hyper-stimulated it is us who suffer from ADD rather than the kids! With our Crackberry's and IPhones............
Last week I was skiing and because I had my Iphone with me, I could photograph and upload images and sentiments of the day. My nephew was with me with his Iphone and between the two of us, we pretty much covered the sights and sounds of St. Moritz! The upside for me is that I am always on top of things. Whenever I see a great design or concept, I can just whip my phone out and snatch a shot.
So watch out for the next series of up 'n coming blogs on trends and travel because it doesn't look like I am slowing down any day soon....

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9qvK1ugPy2o/SNjw_mO3a9I/AAAAAAAAAe0/zXHJr5qskuY/s320/IMG_0501.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249210341085637586" />

In the mood for Fleurs(flowers)

What an exquisite day here in Paris. Sun is shining and there's a freshness to the air that comes with Autumn. Such a wonderful time of year providing the sun is shining. Because the sun don't always shine in Paris. It can get kinda grey (not to mention my english teacher who would be turning grey from that badly slandered sentence). In fact speaking of sun, I was in London last weekend and it was absolutely beautiful there as well. Which is somewhat of a miracle because it rained there most of August. Being a child of Africa, I revel in the sun. I had a taste of that in Sardinia this past summer where for 7 days I spent the most amazing time with good friends on a boat in no more than a string bikini for most of the day. More miraculous was that I literally never put on a pair of shoes the whole time ( & makeup for that matter too). Isn't it funny that the times we remember as the best are sometimes the simplest of times? It's really the little things that make the biggest difference..
Today, as I wandered around my favorite place in all of Paris - Rue Cler in the 7th arondissment with the sun shining on my face, I stopped in at one of my favorite florists - Cler Fleurs. After choosing what I wanted, I stood back and watched as a beautiful bouquet was made just for me. Then I walked down the cobble-stoned street lined with fruit vendors, cheese makers, cafes and boutiques and I reveled in the fact that something so simple could make me so content.

Looking for James Blunt in Ibiza

Ibiza is the synonymous with all-night parties, sex drugs and rock and roll so of course, La Kitkat had to go and check it out. Plane touches down in Ibiza at 01:30 am in the morning and its straight to the car and a pitstop at Km5 (Kilometro cinquo). Gorgeous outdoor dining starting earliest at 11pm and going way through to the wee hours of the morning. Perfect temperatures and lavish outdoor dining and we're ready to dance it up on the dance floor for the rest of what remains of the night. A late start the next day and by noon we emerge to a perfect day, sizzling hot and dazzling blue sea beckon us. In an hour we're in the harbour and firing up the boats engines. Donning string bikinis and sunscreen our boat blasts out of the harbour heading towards the azure blue and ragged coastline of Ibiza. Hair blowing in the wind we cannot help break out in huge smiles at the wonder of it all. We anchor off Formentera surrounded by twenty other luxury boats, break out the wine and jump overboard to cool down as the sun beats down on us. Two hours later a rubber dingy comes to pick us up for our lunch reservation which starts only at four. Body clock is way out! We languish at lunch savoring bread dunked in aoli and seafood rich in flavor. Half prepared Mojitos are stacked up at the bar ready to be ordered and guaranteed that the large tower of glasses will surely be all finished by the jet-set who swoop in for the day. Time to go back and we swim back to the boat to break the lethargy. Musics cranked up high and it dance time and photos for the paparrazi who are lurking in high-flying helicopters and on boats that slink past. Sun goes down and its back to the harbour, home for a change of clothing and ready to rock the night again. So many places too little time. Dinner and then on to the famous Pacha nightclub or Insomnia.
Life is hard in Ibiza.. especially when you're looking for James Blunt the whole time. We were? Oops forgot! Funny how that happens....
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9qvK1ugPy2o/SNj0wDKHaII/AAAAAAAAAfM/wzJZa7e2o_0/s320/P1020676.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249214472018946178" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9qvK1ugPy2o/SNjy0iWfZsI/AAAAAAAAAfE/L8oIXcmzQ8w/s320/P1020803.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249212350088570562" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9qvK1ugPy2o/SNjx2Xl2mJI/AAAAAAAAAe8/UaXQPCdeZvE/s320/IMG_0232.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5249211282048325778" />

Photos courtesy of Patricia Nagy.

The Land of Vichy

The name Vichy is synonymous with health and well-being, so I decided to venture south over this french long weekend and see for myself. I had pictured in my head, a sensuous spa. Massages, reflexology and hot stone therapy in a calm, ambient environment and perhaps the distant thought of water was in the back of my head as well. Calm, zen and luxurious, Vichy was not! The Vichy Celestins Spa is au contraire. I cannot say it was bad, it was just VERY different to what I expected. It's all about water in fact. Silly me. The spa is founded around the natural hot springs native to Vichy. Hot water spouts from natural geysers at a temperature of 43.5 degrees centigrade. Hotter than a bath! And, its salty. First day we handed a list of three treatments. First one was a bath in cedar oil. Second a " jet tonique" and thirdly, an enveloppement (a wrap - and not the eating kind). The bath was pretty sedate, an intense jacuzzi-type bath with a few extra "jets" to shock your muscles into working. The "jet tonique' proved to be the terror machine. Calmly, you are herded into a huge shower, disrobed and told to hold on to a handlebar on the wall, with your back toward the therapist. They then stand with a hose in hand and basically hose you down with a jet of water that is so strong you feel like you are being gunned down by a firing squad. I had read a Peter Mayle book a few years before where he goes to a spa and has this done, so it rang and immediate bell. Needless to say I invoked as much Yoga nidra and calm as I could, closed my eyes and tried to meditate my way through the pain. This, and I kept on reminding myself it was good for me and would be over soon. Surprisingly enough, I felt amazing after it was over and l headed to my mud wrap where I finished my first day. That night, I slept better than I have in weeks.
Day two required invoking some serious courage to get myself to the spa and face the firing squad because, as luck had it, I was starting with the "jet tonique" or rather the good ol' hose down first. Minutes leading up to it where spent in dread but once again, thereafter I felt great. I believe a lot people go there to cure ailments. In the "old days", people used to go there for the "cure" from arthritis to infertility. Josephine Bonaparte herself regularly attended therapies such as these to help her get pregnant to produce and heir for Napoleon. Alas she never did. For me, I was just there to experience one of the great french institutions at their best. Clinical, methodical and effective, I feel a great deal better. More toned and better circulation yes! But calm and relaxed. I think I may have to go somewhere else for that...

Alor. It's been a while..so the song goes. Back in Paris at last. Kitty has been on the French Riviera getting in the know about perfumery. My new passion. Fragrance is like music - made up of notes and accords requiring harmony and pitch. Soft, romantic and floral; or passionate, mysterious and animalic. Nothing like a man who wears a great fragrance is there?
Speaking of men.. is it just me or have all the gorgeous ones just come out of the woodwork? In the last week or so I have been almost bowled over by the most stunning men. Just tonight my jaw almost dropped on the floor with this gorgeous man in front of me at the market on Rue Cler. He was impeccably attired - perfectly cut suit, italian shoes and great haircut. I was behind him in the line and was half expecting this guy to turn around and dispell the myth, but he didnt. He shot me an awesome smile and then climbed into his Mazerati and gunned it down the little rue. Wow!! What is it about men and cars? Actually I am a sucker for both - Mazeratis and Porches that is. Actually to clarify - the old Porche '96 model in particular. It takes a certain guy to appreciate the classiness of this year. I would know because my father has one and he's a real frenchman. But back to the younger men. Oh enough already .. I'm getting way ahead of myself. Gotta get me one of those (cars I mean).
Focus Kitty - Fashion week is coming up soon. Shows shows shows. Then flying off to South Africa, hopefully a trip to New York, Marrakesh or Prague and a shot of skiing in St Moritz. Catch me when you can...but in the mean time if you see that gorgeous guy in the Mazerati, tell him Kitkat wants his number...

Eres

Just attended a sneak preview of Eres Nouveaute de l'hiver 2007 collection. Last weekend I was invited to attend Loewe's Spring/Summer collection for '07 at the Plaza Athenee her in Paris. The show was absolutely sublime - the collection very fresh and light. Loewe originates from Spain and is known for its incredible leather creations (part of LVMH group). This collection was more etheral and light. Leather included but mostly lovely tailored cotton - dresses, suits and short ensembles in white, metallics, yellows and oranges. Patrons turned out in style, champagne flowed and chocolate strawberry lollipop creations sprouted from the tables. I was not prepared for the gem fashion finds by the Chaudanne, Meribel village. The ski apparel is incredible. From the likes of Bogner, J.C Castelbajac for Rossignol, Pucci, Prada etc. the europeans really know how to adorn themselves on the slopes. Rhinestones, metallics, tattoos and imprints, they take ski apparel to the next level (as well as the pricing). As for the skiing itself, there has not been a lot of snow but way up high thankfully there was more than enough. Kitkat managed moguls on the black runs this year as did mini-kitkat who was determined her mom wasn't going to be the only risk-taker! Thankfully we were being led by our Scottish rocker -drummer instructor who enabled us to navigate slopes at mucho high speeds!!
Spent much time on the slopes of Courcheval (the airstrip there is where one of the 007 movies was shot) and it's where all the russian millionaires descend during Christmas. Best restaurant was undoubtedly La Soucoupe (Courcheval) with a raging hearth in the middle and a chief with the most incredible complexion I have ever seen in my life. I coudn't get over it. Coincidently, the waiters and barmen were all very good looking and extremely attentive. Either way, I was very relaxed from all the food and wine consumed and skied like a champion for the rest of the day!
Back in Paris in time for Pret-a-Porter shows. Will keep ya posted. Foreign lands that influenced his designs included Africa, Asia, Spain, Russia. A special guide took us explaining the nuances of the clothes, how they were influenced, the use of certain fabrics and his attention to detail. Two things that stood out immediately was the handwork (beadwork and embroidery) and the colors that are just so obviously YSL. As a designer, one can totally appreciate the intense "art"/work and the detail that goes into the creation of such hand-crafted pieces and then the juxta position of the colors that he has used for effect. My favorite was a feathered mini dress from Africa ( quel surprise!).
As I attend more and more of these, I have to say that the brilliance of these shows is not just in the designs themselves, but equally in the way in which they are displayed. The french are particularly brilliant and cutting edge as far as museum showcasing goes.
So as I walked around, I couldn't help myself but picture these designs being modeled by the beautiful Lulu de la Falaise - Yves' muse. It was such a priviledge to be standing in his salon gazing at his sketches and then as I glanced out the window from the salon onto avenue Marceau, I was reminded how often I had passed by gazing at the house of YSL wondering what it must be like inside.....

Fashion, Fashion everywhere and underwear!!

Kitty has been attending the shows and no wonder that this is the birthplace of Haute Couture. The french know how to do fashion shows of all kinds. Take last weeks lingerie shows. Cutting edge.
First of all the buyers are serious. Orders were being written up by the minute. The most popular brands had staffs of 30-40 sales people scribbling away on order sheets (all day). Models walk around in skimpy underwear modelling the latest in divine french lingerie and the shows are totally sublime. The opening fashion show lasted one hour during which most of the top houses showcased their lingerie and lounge wear by theme. In fact, it is truly inspirational to see how the stylists put together an ensemble that would make us want to lounge around our houses dressed like that. (Just would be tough to explain to our kids why mommy was doing that).
For the Europeans, lingerie is a celebration of your body which does not have to be size 0. This is why it is a major industry in this part of the world. And almost all of it is not in bad taste. Beautiful fabrics, ruffles and lace.....soft, delicate and above all, made to flatter the wearer as much as possible.
If you don't already, try wear something gorgeous underneath your clothes. It will change the way you view your day and how you feel about yourself. People always remark that french women have a "je ne sais quoi" about them. Perhaps it's because she's wearing something abolsutely incredible under her clothes and that's what makes her feel like a million dollars!

Voulez-vous Power Plate?

Have you heard of this new exercise craze? Apparently all the small, svette ladies of Paris know the secret...
Walking the streets in the 7th on the left bank, I came across this power plate studio and I had heard about it, so I decided to give it a go. What the hell - I have to be on the beach in South Africa in 2 weeks in a very small Eres bikini, so yeah I'd give it a go!
So I sign up for a course after my instructor, Catherine gave me a generous 20 min free session as a demo, and I have to tell you I am impressed. Basically what you do is you are "positioned" by a personal instructor on the power plate, then she pushes buttons to set the running time (40 secs) and the plate then vibrates the hell out of you. No - it is not erotic in any way darlings and frankly, its not really that hard (initially), but before long you start to break a sweat. Then by position #7 your legs can start to buckle. The premise of the machine is that it works ALL your muscles at once, not isolated groups like when you run or kickbox or anything. When I walk out after 30mins my whole body feels like jelly. You are only supposed to do it twice a week (pushing it 3 times) and your cadio is done afterwards if you can manage it. Walking back to my apartment, my wobbly limbs doth protest and even though my brain says I could do a lap or two around the Champs de Mars, my body is too weak.
So I think I'll stick with this for a while and let time tell.
Now you know my little french secret because french women DO exercise. They just make damn sure you don't know about it! How else are they going to look good in all that amazing french lingerie?

If you're in Paris, you can find this power plate studio @ 22, Rue Augereau - 75007 . It's all about his experiences moving to Paris from New York. One of those books you can't put down because it is a very funny and very intelligent account of the cultural differences one encounters when you move to another country. Especially from New York to Paris! The author was just as in love with Paris as Natasha is (he has since moved back to New York), but the nuances of moving here and living here are a daily challenge at best. For now though, Kitty is basking on the glow of the Eiffel Tower which is almost a stone's throw from her apartment. Her kiddies call it their night light. Today she is off to the newly reopened Musee des Arts Decoratifs on Rue de Rivoli and tonight she gets to wear her new red Gucci platforms to a themed party. Rouge et Rose/Red and Pink and the men have to bring a rose. Even though it is grey and dark outside, the Parisians still know how to keep it alive.

Moda in Roma

Kitty on a recent trip to the enchanted city of Rome, was once again struck by the major differences in fashion between say Paris, New York and London.
Roma is a little more over the top. A little more revealing and a lot more tanned! Yes, it is a little warmer down south but regardless, there is a whole lot more skin showing in Italy. Cleavage features high of necessary requirements - so does ripped jeans and stilletos. Italian woman want to be noticed and that they are. Beautiful, tall, tanned brunette godesses abound and with vivacious personalities to boot. Italian women really know how to enjoy themselves. Italian men need to be better behaved mind you, but they can't help themselves. Who could?
Shopping in the area of the Spanish steps is wonderful. Kitty's favorite being Gianfranco Ferre. Gorgeous. Prada is sublime and the real treat is actually in the mens fashion. Fantastic fabrics and style abound so there really is no excuse for bad dressing or bad shoes. The leather is truly to die for.
As for what to do other than shopping? Sip cocktails on the rooftop terrace at the Intercontinental overlooking the beautiful ancient city at dusk. Dinner at the renowned Harry's Bar enjoying a bottle of Amorone Tedeschi (italian red) is the best and spending a relaxing Sunday at The Villa Borghese. Priceless or as the italians would say "Molto bene" (very good).
Arrivaderci Roma.......next time Kitty heads over she plans to visit Sardinia in summer with her gorgeous friend Francesca.

Sunday Morning in Paris - the morning after the night before

As I do my favorite run on a Sunday morning, I notice not just one but a few men walking home after the night before. These men look a little haggard. Still in their suits, they walk head down heading for home. Stubble on their chins, suit jacket draped over their shoulder, they are testimony to the passion of a Saturday night in Paris. A decision to stay over - perhaps because they were drunk? No, I think not. Paris is truly the city of passion. Here the men ogle you with their eyes and have no problem walking up to you and propositioning you in broad daylight. And its not just the older men. You can see it in the older school boys eyes. They have, of course learned from their papas. As a woman, it is nice to be appreciated. It is not a look that is disparaging. No - it is the look of appreciation. Appreciation of beauty - of subtle nuances. As I run past one more Mr Romantic, I almost think I can smell the perfume she left on him. My mind disappears in thoughts of the romance of the night.
Aaaah Paris. Bon Voyage Natasha!

A bevvy of beauties ascended on the W Times Square Hotel where they packed out their luxurious penthouse suite for a giant sleep over (which was never meant to be).
This was the scene for Natasha’s farewell party to Paris. After a day of serious shopping and cocktails, it was in to the Buddha Bar in the meatpacking district. Natasha’ s favorite restuarant is the Buddha Bar in Paris, so it only seemed fitting to do the bon voyage in the new Buddha Bar. Her favorite is the sublime decor - from the giant buddha that keeps it zen, to the subdued and romantic lighting and the sounds of Claude Challe’s Buddha Bar compilations. Even more delectable is the asian-fusion inspired menu coupled with some great Moët. Thankfully, at this venue, unlike at Bungalow 8, divas don’t have to line up for the loo (even if you’re standing with Sienna and Lindsay). Actually, that could be more of an occupational hazard with the cat fights of late.
After the Buddha bar, Natasha and her entourage were whisked into awaiting limos heading for the hottest new nightclub. A couple of blocks away, the limos and the double doors of the Pink Elephant glide open as her good friend "Rockstar", sweeps them into the VIP section of the club. Amist models, and millionaires, P Diddy hangs out at a table next to them. Champagne flows and strobe lights pulsate. Gnarls Barkely belts out "I know you're crazy"... Natasha joins an asian beauty on the platform and girates the night away while models take turns trying to woo her. Natasha is not interested in hooking up with anyone. She's having too much of a good time. At four thirty in the morning they make their way out of the club onto the busy streets filled with nightclub revellers. A car awaits and whisks them to a stunning penthouse overlooking the Brooklyn bridge where they watch the sun come up. Six babes share a bond at the dawn of the day as the time comes when Natasha has to bid au revoir for now. The private plane awaits and is ready to whisk her away to city of lights. A bientot New York... I love you...

Natasha Kitkat

Natasha KitKat is the brainchild of owner/entrepreneur Chantal Palmer.
